No secret that I love music and have a special place in my heart for Thai music, from classical to luuk tung [country]. A favorite singer is Nu Miter [ หนู มิเตอร์ ], a very talented musican and composer. I heard one of his songs on my first trip to Thailand nearly a decade ago. Immediately bought one of his CDs and took it back to Mexico with me. Since I moved here I have purchased each of his new CDs as it was released.
Have taken a bit of a break from blogging for the past week due to a minor computer malfunction. On returning to my usual purusal of favorite blogs, I discover that the atheists and the christians are still battling each other with their never-ending, and somewhat senseless, vehemence. Each group is firmly convinced that they, and they alone, have 'the Truth'.
The Democrats and Republicans continue hissing in each others direction, etc, etc. etc. Have come to the conclusion that it all amounts to little more than countless piles of 'rabbit pellets' left scattered around the world and internet.
Better to follow my particlar path which consists of attempting to find the positive and personally rewarding aspects of everyday life.
So, from the acclaimed PBS series "The Power of Myth with Joseph Campbell", here is one of the pivotal moments when Joseph Campbell talks about how to 'follow your bliss'.
Russia's incomparable tenor Oleg Evgenevich Pogudin [Олéг Евге́ньевич Погу́дин] was born on December 22, 1968, in Leningrad and is an actor and singer, primarily of Russian 'romances'. There are a large number of his videos on YouTube his web site contains hundreds of downloadable MP3s.
After graduating from high school Pogudin enrolled in the Leningrad-based Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinema and upon graduation interned in the Eugene O'Neil's Center in the United States . "It was a great event in my life and a brilliant school, too", he says. "My partners were well-known actors. But I never stopped singing and finally my love for romance prevailed. It's a veritably immortal genre with inexhaustible potential. You can sing one and the same romance many times and each time in a different way".
For those of us of Slavic heritage, his voice and music is not unlike a vital part of life.
Twelve million people world-wide belong to and accept the teachings of The Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints [Mormons]. As a retired professor of the English language & World Literature I have always enjoyed a well written fantasy. And the Book of Mormon and Pearl of Great Price, though certainly not very well crafted, are two of the best fantasies around - even if they are a complete and utter fraud written by Joseph Smith. A fraud because they are puportedly revealed truth from God by way of his angels and prophet, aka Joseph Smith.
B.H. Roberts "Comprehensive History of the Church" 2:138
"...if Joseph Smith's translation of the Egyptian parchment could be proven false, then doubt would be thrown also upon the genuineness of his translation of the Book of Mormon, and thus all his pretensions as a translator would be exposed and come to naught."
"Both Mormon and non-Mormon Egyptologists have examined and translated the fragments, concluding that they are portions of funerary texts, dating to about the first century BC. [According to Egyptologists] The text bears no resemblance to the translation given by Joseph Smith . . . "

The Lost Book of Abraham
The Lost Book of Abraham is an award-winning documentary that investigates the remarkable claim that LDS founder Joseph Smith translated a lost book of scripture from an Egyptian papyrus scroll he obtained in 1835. The views of Mormon believers and World-class Egyptologists are both presented.
"Ken Starr, who led the campaign to impeach President Bill Clinton, filed a legal brief last month -- on behalf of the "Yes on 8" campaign -- that would forcibly divorce 18,000 same-sex couples that were married in California last year before the passage of Prop 8.
Watch "Fidelity" and sign our letter to the state Supreme Court before they hear oral arguments in the case on March 5. Tell the Supreme Court to invalidate Prop 8, reject Ken Starr's case, and let loving, committed couples marry. DEADLINE EXTENDED: March 2.
215,372 people have signed this letter (as of Friday, February 13). Our new Courage Campaign community goal is 250,000 signers. Will you add your name now?"
"As Americans who believe in the rule of law and fundamental civil rights, we know that Ken Starr and the Prop 8 Legal Defense Fund's shameful attempt to nullify equal protection and all these bonded unions will be condemned in the eyes of history. We know that, ultimately, love will prevail, no matter how hard they try to fight it."
Today is a double celebration of Charles Darwin – 200 years since his birth and 150 since the publication of The Origin of Species.
Charles Darwin first became interested in entomology during his childhood, and this interest grew into a beetle-collecting obsession during his college days. Following the voyage of the Beagle, his focus on insects shifted from collecting specimens to searching for insect observations that supported his theory of natural selection as proposed in the Origin of Species.
Insects are abundant, and a great source of free protein. Fried bugs as snacks are quite popular here in Thailand. So why not eat a bug for Darwin, on this his special day?
The Catch the Fire Ministries has tried to blame the bushfires disaster on laws decriminalising abortion in Victoria.
The Pentecostal church's leader, Pastor Danny Nalliah, claimed he had a dream about raging fires on October 21 last year and that he woke with "a flash from the Spirit of God: that His conditional protection has been removed from the nation of Australia, in particular Victoria, for approving the slaughter of innocent children in the womb".
Asked if he believed in a God who would take vengeance by killing so many people indiscriminately - even those who opposed abortion, Mr Nalliah referred to 2 Chronicles 7:14 to vouch for his assertion that God could withdraw his protection from a nation. "The Bible is very clear," he said. "If you walk out of God's protection and turn your back on Him, you are an open target for the devil to destroy." . . . . .
Sorry Pastor Nalliah, but you are as heartless and inhuman in your views as your make-believe god. Why would any supreme being incinerate nearly 200 innocent men, women and children simply because a law had been passed decriminalizing abortion? Those killed in the bushfires had no control over the passage of that law, so why were they targeted to die for the actions of lawmakers in Melbourne?
The absolutely warped logic of people adicted to religion, like Pastor Nalliah, is something that I shall never be able to understand.
